“Learning how stories are made”

2013–2017 East China Normal University · Media · 2013–2017

This was the first time I thought seriously about how content gets presented.

The assignments were wide open. I argued that Disney’s world needs princes less and less; I took apart how a score changes what you feel about an image. That’s where I learned to sharpen a point of view — and then turn words into pictures, sound and rhythm.

The department leaned serious and journalistic. At the same time, our professors kept reminding us that short, frequent, fast-paced video was an inevitable trend: the form keeps changing, but content is still king.

Communication studies made me notice how public opinion gets built. As a kid I’d heard the line that history is a little girl you can dress up however you like, and I just thought it was clever. Later I understood it: the same event, differently chosen, ordered and told, leaves a completely different impression.

What this experience left me with was a reminder: while understanding others, do not forget to understand yourself. Know what an audience wants to hear, while keeping your own judgment, idealism and care for people.

For grad school I went to San Francisco to study film, on the directing track. Light and shadow, dialogue, where to place an object, how to tell the story… it was wonderful. It was the first time I really felt that beauty is something you can build.

Film is also relentlessly collaborative. One short needs a cinematographer, actors, lighting, sound, a producer, an editor. I had to find reliable, capable people fast — work out what actually drives them, figure out how to get them to help me finish my assignment, and above all say clearly what I was worth to them.

One more thing: this was where I first came face to face with talent. The same light, the same location, the same material — in different hands it grows into something completely different. Because people simply don’t see the world the same way.

What this experience left me with was curiosity about people, an eye for detail, and respect for both skill and talent. Some techniques can be learned through practice, but sensibility, judgment and ways of telling a story are hard to reduce to a single standard.

“Learning how stories become reality”

Rotman · Fall 2026 Exchange

I have worked in my family’s company since graduation. It gave me early access to real problems, but it also made me very good at solving problems inside a world I already knew.

AI has made learning cheaper. A concept, an industry or a tool is easier to explore than ever. But first I need to know what is worth learning. Often the problem is not that AI cannot answer me—it is that I do not yet know what to ask.

That is a large part of why I came to CEIBS. Classmates from finance, industry, technology and other fields keep bringing up questions I would never have followed on my own. Inside an information bubble, it is easy to go deeper only into familiar subjects; a different group of people forces me to notice what sits outside my experience.

What this experience left me with was a chance to re-examine what I know, broaden my view of the business world beyond my own experience, and ultimately put my ideas into practice.
